Challenge regarding Christian morality

No, I do not think integrity is an outdated concept but your definition of what constitutes integrity and mine are different. In your example, the husband was not showing integrity. His wife wanted out of the marriage. The loving, honorable thing to do would be to let her go.

So... In your Honest opinion, this is the some total of Christian involvement in soceity, that is not mirrored in the Godless 'morality' soceity practices on it's own?

I can think of 1/2 a dozen different laws that permit actions the bible forbids..

I'm not sure what you're asking.

What is it, specifically, that (in your opinion) I seem to believe is the sum total of christian involvement in society?

Before you make any assumptions of what secular morality is, you should look at various societies around the world, in which few (if any) of the citizens believe in your god. I think you'll find that the basic tenets of morality hold in the majority of societies, regardless of any religious faith (or lack thereof).

So eye for an eye still stands, even if he also tries to imply that it doesn't. We have a contradiction upon a contradictions. So again the reader is left to just pick their way out of each dilemma to match their preconceptions. Clearly people can and do take both interpretations. If they are "wrong" then God is a terrible author and doesn't care enough to come sort this stuff out.
there is a word for an "eye for an eye", it's called "Justice", I don't think anyone here is against the concept of justice. Law requires a penalty or it's isn't a Law, Therefore the Law demands Justice.

Grace (mercy) supersedes the Law, those that are in Christ exist in a state of grace and are no longer under the law. The only Law for them is love - treat others how you would like to be treated.

Quote:Mark 12
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Quote:Matthew 7
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
To be clear, it is impossible to get into heaven under the Law, because everyone is guilty of breaking it, therefore since Christ paid the penalty, the law no longer applies to all who've accepted the pardon.

What do you justice is? As far as I know, there is no such thing, in practice or theory.

RE: Challenge regarding Christian morality
My evaluation so far is that christian morality, even the parts which are in regard to supposedly good things like relationships, are actually very harmful. So not only is it full of evil, it's full of warped "good" too. My opinion of it is lower, if that's possible, than when I started the thread.

If anyone is basing what they do on whether or not "God approves" then they are making no consideration whatsoever about whether it is actually a positive effect on human wellbeing. To claim that you do consider this is to admit to filtering out "what God wants" when you find it objectionable. Which I'm very happy people do, but it shows that you're not even being consistent.

Consider, just for a minute, the implications of your way of thinking about what is "moral", if you are wrong and there is no God at all. Please just think about it very briefly. Sure, I could be wrong too, God could exist. And if one does exist, I stand by all my actions because I'm using the brain God gave me to try and be the best person I can be. If he's worth a damn, he will respect that.

I think religion thrives on the idea that people look for some sort of "cosmic justice". They want to think people can't get away with being bad, they will get punished. And the good will be rewarded. Even if it doesn't happen while they are alive. I can see the appeal of that, but the fact is there is no cosmic justice, and it's naive to expect any. All we can do is have sensible laws, enforce them fairly and try to promote good morality.

What do you think justice is? What is your definition?

A maniac kills a child. He is a married breadwinner. He is caught beyond a shadow of a doubt. His family are good people.

Throw the maniac in jail and the family suffers.

Execute the man, the family suffers.

As the child is already dead, the only way to avoid adding to the suffering is to leave the maniac alone.

Where is the justice?

It just takes them a while.

I suspect that they wait so that they won't end up disagreeing with each other.
