Ok, I think everyone here who is familiar with me knows I don't mince words about what I think of religion. But just now I ran into an atheist who doesn't seem to understand, just like theists, there is no such thing as a utopia. He kept on talking about the need to get rid of religion.
There will never be a perfect world, we will never, for any label, rid the world of others. No one group will get 100% of everything. I only agree that the civil tactic is to use our voices, and challenge bad claims and cruel actions.
But there will never be a utopia where any one group gets 100% of what it wants.

I agree.
Human beings tend to seperate out groups into us and them. When one group becomes the other then it is easier to dehumanize them. You don't need to be religious to dehumanize other groups
The good news is that the more contact we have with other people and different ideas the harder it is to not see them as individuals with the same feelings as you have

Utopia works like a means to improve society. We can push ourselves towards better and utopias help us see our goals. But that's it

It is ever so much more civil to insult others than to subject them to mass genocide, no two ways about it. Wonder if there are any other alternatives?

We don't need to get rid of religion altogether. If someone wants to believe in supernatural creatures, they're free to. Just don't look down on, or get in the way of, people who don't share your beliefs. Keep them out of power. Protect reasonable people from extremists. When someone in office says the mos important thing they want to do to solve real world problems is pray, they need to be replaced.
Pray in your home if you want. take comfort in whatever afterlife suits your fancy. Just don't try to turn the country into a theocracy, teach your kids that science is bad and that they need forgiveness for something they have no control over, or ostracize or harm people for not believing the same things you do. if they don't put their hands on you, don't put your hands on them.
I know the god of Abraham demands you shed the blood of people who don't worship him, but that just doesn't fly in civilized society anymore.

Religions are a useful device for allowing you to easily spot idiots.
It's like having a club only morons can join and the members go around telling everyone they're in that club.(In America at least)
