Like a confessional? Hm, let's see... I was born, apparently. And I cheated on a biology test once. Pretty demonic, huh?

If God thinks cherry picking scriptures to ignore and obey is a sin, we are looking at a Christian armageddon.

RE: Sins
I feel extremely sad to think of all those people around the world hating themselves for "sins" which are often nothing more than natural behaviour. I can't stand it that they are internally punishing themselves because people who are meant to care for them have broken their mind down with mythical poison. All of that sadness, people thinking they have something to apologize for, when in fact sin is absolutely nothing. It's a man made myth.

Sin is not the same as immorality. If you willingly do something you know is wrong, actually wrong because it hurts someone, then it's natural to feel guilty about that. But sin is not to do with what is wrong, it's an arbitrary set of things that God doesn't like. And since there's no reason to think this God is real, there's no reason to think sin is either.

Such suffering over nothing, so many people blaming themselves for things they can't possibly even control. That's one of the reasons why christianity is such a vile, evil religion. It turns people against themselves, and then pretends to offer the solution. It makes me sick.

And that's the beauty of it. Generations of clergymen made a fortune out of that concept. It gives them power over people like Drich, who sees himself (and anybody else for that matter) enslaved to sin. So these people are easily manipulated to do someone else's bidding if that someone offers them a way to salvation.

Sin isn't a christian invention by the way. Lots of older religions knew that concept too. Among them the old Egyptians, who had quite similar thougts on the afterlife and the final judgment. And boy did the priesthood thrive by selling the book of the dead, which was more or less a GPS system for the perils that await the freshly deceased.

He's saying that you can't remove the stigma of sin by being good on balance. Without the sacrifice offered by Jesus, you can't get to heaven. Everyone sins, and everyone needs Jesus to intercede, or we're fucked.

His reference to a zombie infection is reminiscent of Hitchens' description of atonement, where we are created sick and commanded to be well, on pain of eternal torment.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

The greatest flim flam the world has ever known.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Does it do that to you? If that is the case, I want the next exit to Brooklyn!
We are to be perfect as God is perfect...not necessarily the same concept that we have of perfection. It seems that we think we "know" what that is, and thus the SNAFU...at least in my view from the valley surrounded by mountains.

I must be slow today because I don't understand your comment about the valley and how it applies to what Robvalue said. The meaning will probably be something obvious that makes me feel stupid.

This thread is making me very happy that I am not a Christian.

As far as I've ever been able to determine, sin is the disease the snake oil salesmen try to convince you that you've got so they can sell you their snake oil, which is the cure.

The valley thing just means I don't necessarily have the best perspective on things...it is only one perspective of an infinite number. Now it makes me feel stupid!
