ROME (AP) — Italy's migration crisis took on a deadly new twist Thursday as police in Sicily reported that Muslim migrants had thrown 12 Christians overboard during a recent crossing from Libya, and aid groups said another 41 were feared drowned in a separate incident.

Does anyone know if the Italians are sending these migrants back or letting them stay?  Because, if they are letting them stay then they are simply rewarding them and encouraging others to take to the boats which seems counterproductive if your goal is to stop these mass drownings.

I don't know, but if the report is true then you must question how these people would be able to integrate into a modern society. Unfortunately, the EU is so politically fucked up that to even consider rejecting an asylum seeker is treason.

The migrants typically do not want to stay in Italy.  Benefits are better if they head north, so they do.

It sounds like an example of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

Again, last year the US border was inundated with unaccompanied children or women with families who had been told that all they had to do was reach the US border and they would be granted asylum.  This was a lie but it spread like wildfire.  Thousands paid the smugglers and took the risks of the journey.  When they finally saw a US Border Patrol agent they gleefully walked up to them and surrendered thinking they were safe.  When they were sent home in droves and their governments spread the word the tide finally dried up but not before the smugglers got rich(er) and who knows how many died making the journey?  And that was all because of a rumor.

The EU seems to think that it is a great fucking idea to hold out this promise of hope but still wants to be saddened when thousands drown trying to get there.  Make up your minds. Either welcome them with open arms by sending out ships to pick them up at sea or deport them as soon as they reach shore.  If you want the flood to stop you have to stop pretending that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Mainly this seems to be a policy decision.  Hand-wringing will not solve it.

I don't think it has anything to do with rewarding. I think it has everything to do with what is good about the west, all be it imperfect, our empathy for our fellow humans. I don't see this type of thing as any different when people drowned trying to get from Cuba to FLA or drowned trying to cross the Rio Grand.

If I was desperate to escape war crime and poverty, I would not want someone to send me back.
