Venice mayor bans anti-discrimination books from primary schools
It appears that Italian Catholics have something going for "Gender Theory". Basically, these guys think there is a conspiracy to actively instruct children that being gay is not only okay - it's something that should be encouraged. Yup, think tin-foil hats, except with a cross on the top. I really don't want to discuss what they think because it's evident that they're out of their minds, but this time they fucked up.

So, kindergartens and primary schools in Venice had this "Reading without stereotypes" program going on, which involved the (optional) reading of children's books about sensitive issues such as bullying, homophobia, divorce, and non-traditional families. Well, the new centre-right mayor simply banned these books from the schools, saying that “We don’t want to discriminate against anyone and at home parents can call themselves daddy number one and daddy number two, but I have to consider the majority of families, which have a mum and a dad." The fuckhead didn't even pay attention to what he was banning - because all the anti-bullying books, or books which were simply about empathy and the acceptance of diversity were banned too.

And once again, the Catho-Fascists follow their rule: if you can't prove it wrong, ban it.

Luckily, there was some backlash. The Italian Children's Book Writers Association condemned this act as "an authoritarian practice that was seen only in the darkest of dictatorships", and now the mayor has declared that there will be a more thorough study of the books to be banned.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How long has he been mayor? What brought this on? Gawds, I hate it when I see positive things take a backslide because of one backwards way of thinking.

He was elected just a couple weeks ago. His victory was the result of a disastrous campaign by the Democrat party, and the heavily conservative culture of Veneto. Also, Italian politicians like to please the local Cardinals, as they control large numbers of votes :/

I know this is coming from a USian, so it probably falls flat (although, yay majority of SCOTUS!), but that's just evil.

Is fascism making a comeback in Italy?

Is Venice an autonomous region, kinda like Catalonia in Spain? If so, are they legally and constitutionally authorized to take these legislative measures?

No, Veneto is a regular region, and besides, this is just the city of Venice...
I don't know about primary schools, but public preschools are controlled by the Comune (the municipality), so they have the right to do things like these... Except this is a case of pure and simple censorship that doesn't even make sense (why would you even ban books against bullying?!)

Why stop at banning, let the burning begin (insert evil laugh here)!
