Extraneous material doesn't count. The Bombadil section is a speed bump, nothing more.

I explained why it isn’t. If not for Bombadil, the Quest would have failed.

Sorry, he was never going to work in a movie. Deadend character. This is the fifty-third year I've argued about him.

Jackson had no trouble including dead end characters - Legolas, Boromir, Pippin, Butterbur. A character as crucial to the Quest as Bombadil merits inclusion at least as much as those.

I don't agree, I remember wondering why he was in there at all. I thought it was a pet project of some sort.

I had a crush on Bombadil when I first read of him in the book.

Tolkien put him in so the Quest wouldn't fail. Not sure how many different ways I can point this out.

Bombadil is a main character in my fan fiction short story King Oak, which takes place about a decade after the War of the Ring.

But why such a clumsy "save"?

Deus ex machina (/ˌdeɪəs ɛks ˈmækɪnə, ˈmɑːk-/ DAY-əs ex-MA(H)K-in-ə,[1] Latin: [ˈdɛ.ʊs ɛks ˈmaːkʰɪnaː]; plural: dei ex machina; English "god out of the machine")[2][3] is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly and/or abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence.[4][5] Its function is generally to resolve an otherwise irresolvable plot situation, to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, and/or act as a comedic device.[6]

‘Clumsy’? Elegant. Merry using the barrow sword to stab the Nazgûl aided the fulfillment of the prophecy. Given Bombadil’s immense power, it lends credence to the notion that he took part (a crucial part) in the downfall of Sauron.
