I always thought our current concept of clown had its roots in things like court jesters or fools who purposefully dressed absurdly or caricaturish (or were made to dress absurdly or caricaturish). I suppose that has colored my perception of clowns because when I picture them I'm more readily visualizing this:
because these were the sorts of "clown" things that were around my house. (My mom likes clowns/jesters and has made many a doll, toy, and costume along these lines)
