I can only speak as a Catholic here. But the Catholic Church is silent on the interpretation of many bible passages, leaving it up to the individual to interpret it in a way they see fit, as long as it stays true to the faith and true to our beliefs about God and Jesus.
Some Catholics believe in the literal interpretation of Genesis, for example. But most do not. Neither is going against Church teaching.
