I'll rephrase and state: "Prior to singularity there was no time, no space, and no matter. The big bang is a rapid expansion of the space and matter found within the singularity. Is that a satisfactory representation?
Orange, I think the key point is we don't know anything before Planck time. So, we can only go back to that horizon. Before that, the current laws of physics may not hold.
Also, matter and energy are different forms of the same thing. So, you can't really divorce one from the other. And energy was certainly present at Planck time and was not created AFAIK. I'm not sure about time, but space expanded during the BB, but we don't know what form it may have existed in here prior to Planck time. There are many theories, but little to no empirical evidence, again AFIAIK.
Alex K could no doubt wax eloquent and in detail here. I'm an IT guy. What the hell do I know?
