I agree that the success of Christianity is absolutely not evidence for the historical existence of "Jesus". Even the gospel authors could not be sure they were writing about a real person, they were relying on stories that had been passed on.
The belief itself is enough to account for what has happened, the truth behind it is not required. But each new generation will have easy access to the "evidence" and how shit it is, so it may undermine their belief before it gets ingrained. Cool!
