A VPN doesn't disguise your credit card details or your email address.
It also doesn't stop your better half from simply looking at your computer or finding out in other ways. I hate to labour the point, but talking about privacy when having an affair is laughable. I honestly think if you're doing something as classless as that, you don't deserve any privacy in the slightest.
