Well because of a magic wizard who made the laws of physics, of course.
And having created the cosmos with its physical laws, the wizard got busy with the really important stuff: foreskins, dietary rules, schematics for a temple he knew would be destroyed, and making plot notes on a strange, arbitrary, hard-to-believe salvation scheme he thought would be fun to foist on certain animals in his creation with rewards for the dullards who buy it and punishment for those who don't.
