Arthur, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars are all bastardizations of the Hero's Journey. Lucas was a huge fan of Joseph Campbell's work, and one of the last big interviews of Campbell was conducted by Bill Moyers on Skywalker Ranch. It's an interesting transcription to read in book form, or to watch as a series of shows, called "The Power of Myth."
They're not bastardizations of the Hero's Journey, they are all stories told using the framework of the Hero's Journey. If they were a bastardization of it, the Hero's Journey would have to have been its own story at one point, and it has never been. The Hero's Journey is the armature upon which the sculpture is created.
Yeah, no one is due any royalties here. The hero's journey isn't anything we use so much as something that uses us. It is a reflection of something that appeals to us across cultures, yet more evidence that we are not blank tablets at birth.
