When I was younger, I thought marriage was a beautiful thing.
Now, I'm not so sure. I see gay couples that were happily together for years, who FINALLY were able to get married and enjoy the financial benefits marriage would bring . . . (yay?) . . . but now are having difficulties and have to get a DIVORCE. I have a straight friend whose husband recently died. He had somehow managed to hide the fact that he was a gambler - - with sizable debts - - from her. Now, who has to pay the debts that she didn't approve or even know existed? -- She does. I have a cousin who got married to his long-time girlfriend - - they had been together for 20 years before marriage. He got a good job. She's now addicted to prescription pills, and spends most of her life in bed. He's angry and feels STUCK with her.
Church people say it's a beautiful thing, given to us by god. I say that it's a binding contract to try to prevent cheating (unsuccessful), to legitimize which kids are yours (partially successful), and to be able to feed those kids (partially successful).
I'm not sure marriage will last in its current form -
