The problem with that example is that you assume something that Jesus was able to teach Peter to do would suddenly be forgotten by Peter without the presence of Jesus.
That's like saying you got inside the white house and suddenly spots an old friend and chat up with her momentarily completely forgetting about whoever bought you inside White house only to be surrounded by Black Ops for trespassing - which you didn't.
If you were right whilst saying that it is Jesus's presence which enabled Peter to perform said miracle then he wouldn't have had trouble walking on water whilst still being in presence of Jesus by getting frightened by the wind and tides.
