Fox News is behind a lot of the disconnect. A recent study on Fox News was done by the University of Maryland and it found that watching Fox News really widens the information gap.

It appears to me that the lies outlined in the article are the talking points which the right has not just embraced, but have also gone full tilt true believer behind. Sometimes I think that Fox is nothing more than a black ops experiment. Charting how many times the big lie needs to be told for it to be embraced. How strongly will the Fox disciples deny the truth when it runs counter to one of their lies? And so on . . . .
