My comment to your post asking why some structured order and a "pope" weren't needed for protestants to evolve out of the barbaric middle age phase,

There were no "protestants" in the middle ages.  Luther started his bullshit in the early 16th century.  Prior to that the church had a monopoly and viciously enforced it against any one who gave them any shit, check out the Cathars and the Hussites for two examples.  The Inquisition pre-dated Luther by 3 centuries.  Although Luther failed to reform the church he did succeed in detaching a number of territories, mainly in Germanic Europe and these, even when they differed on various pieces of dogma, were forced into an uneasy alliance by the unrelenting hostility of the church.  "The enemy of my enemy is my friend,"  as the saying goes. 

By the time the Wars of the Reformation ended the general population was sick of all their bullshit and the churches lost the power to murder those who dared oppose them.  You be sure to let me know when you figure out a way to strip that power from modern islamists.
