Anom, How does this relate to the stupid cross guard? This is a legitimate use of this sort of weapon whether or it was a double-ended light saber or just a stick. In the case of the light saber with the light-saber cross guard it would be like having a sword with a cross guard made of daggers - you're far more likely to injure yourself than your opponent.
