To answer the main question, yeh crucifixion is bad. The idea is that God is sending down his own son to be sacrificed and treated badly. It wouldn't have been as dramatic of a story, or a sacrifice, if god sent his son down to chill out,have a nice time and chat to people about God.
The contradiction, which you mentioned, is really that the Jews were bad for killing Jesus, even though that was supposedly God's plan.
