Regular? Hardly. The last time I recall putting a dog down was several years ago. It was a rather large (stray) dog that had gotten quilled by a porcupine more than I would have thought possible had i not seen it.
While the occurrence of putting something down is uncommon, I am far from inexperienced with doing so.
