The thing is, you could probably do religious deconversions, scientifically and (arguably) harmlessly. Given enough time and without someone spouting gibberish in their ear, you could probably unprogram someone.

That would be a legitimate and achievable outcome, yet imagine the outrage! Whereas something with no such outcome is still going on, so some people must think it's ok...

Of course, I'd never suggest actually doing the deconversion I mentioned. I'm just contrasting it.
