If you haven't already, I recommend reading The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man by Robert M. Price for a fair evaluation of the historical Jesus. He makes less assumptions that he was or wasn't real than some other writers, and more or less does an inventory of the different possibilities. He'll discuss different possibilities on a specific aspect of Jesus's life in a chapter, then get to what he thinks.
Also, Bart Ehrman's books like Jesus Interrupted and Misquoting Jesus give a good idea of how accurate scripture is and what we can really know about Jesus, although Ehrman thinks Jesus was a historical figure and an apocalyptic rabbi.
