Their's is the only narrative they want to see in print and televised. Because it doesn't stand closer scrutiny, since all they are able to do is to incite fear, hatred and exclusion.
And because, implicitly, they wish to break the rules of the narrative without consequences. It's no accident that all those ardently anti-gay preachers get caught with their pants down, nor that the anti-trans "protect women and children!" guys are exactly the same guy admitting that they'd totally prey on women if given the chance. The narrative exists to further their interests and nothing more, certainly not to constrain them in any way.
