To you, to muslims, to middle easterners, at least some, islam and honor are synonymous. They are not, to me. In the case of this unfortunate muslim shooter I'm not disputing that he was trying to get in the good graces of his god, his version of honor. I'm pretty sure that's why he did what he did..because of what he believed, as a muslim. Men don't make women wear garbage bags for honor, some men just call it that. Honor is just a word used in a translation to give me some sense of the analog concept held by another culture or society.
Serving as a soldier doesn't mean you saw the region well enough; American soldiers were spending their time hiding in green zones and pooping their pants at any signs of attack. You guys saw the region from the skies only, or from the openings in your bunkers. Being on the streets meant death, it's not like the people greeted you with flowers.
Anyhow you know nothing about the Middle East. That's why you let your dogs (the Arab regimes) do the dirty business, and you as Americans, prefer to bomb from above, without "staining" your shoes in gutter.
Honor's definition does differ from a place to the other, but to Arabs it's cultural, Islam is a mere decoration. In times of need, Islam is thrown in the garbage. Homosexuality is hated here because the man who does it is seen as a weak, submissive mate, who take it in the ass. That's why (and you should know this as a soldier), Americans tortured Iraqies in Abu-Ghuraib via stripping them naked and piling them up atop of each other.
Sodomy is practiced against the inmates too in other prisons to break their honor.
