Not that I support that, but previously the army always started a coup when politics started to move the country away from secularism. Erdogan certainly knew where to crack down when coming to power. First, he castrated the army, then he went after the press and now he's going after dissent in the parliament.
I think, that's the real problem. One of the select few really secular countries in the world, moved towards authoritarian rule. Erdogan, even if he doesn't show it at every given opportunity, is an Islamist. I still believe he's rather fighting for his own glory, rather than some fundie religious ideas, but that doesn't make it any better.
I don't usually support it either, it's not exactly the best choice, but sadly it is sometimes nessecary. You're right about everything in that post.

Admittedly, I haven't really followed Turkish news much lately. I know what he is doing regarding dissent in parliament and the press, but what did he do to the military? Dismiss the high ranking officers who disliked him?
