Dude when you like music it's not an act of free will, correct? You are respecting the people who have managed to do something amazing or something you enjoy / appreciate. Simple.
I believe the taste we acquire for music does involve free-will as does falling in love with a person. It's not that it's totally us deciding but neither is it without a free-will on our part.
So there is no such thing as objective merit type value, but there is an objective awesomeness to people you can't help but respect. Ok, define what awesomeness is. Why not include merit type value in that definition?
