Further, for all intents and purposes, news outlets and history books for that country (typically in their own language) record the accurate date translated into whatever format that country prefers.
So when I was learning to read French, I didn't demand the French change to American dating format, I just remembered that among other things the French stated their dates differently. Which, being American, I figured was the least I could do.
September 11 happened on American soil. Too bad for the rest of the world if our numerical dating system for that particular event bothers them. They didn't get hit. If they experience something similar, we will take their correct date into account and either translate it into our format or call the event by whatever name they choose.
