That's what Bernie did and he did influence the party platform. Under the present two-party system, the primaries is where you "take to the streets and demand change." I don't see where trying to do it in the general election is going to accomplish anything but get the most ideologically-opposed candidate to your's elected. As the Democrats have noted, GREEN is an acronym for Get Republicans Elected Every November.
We don't have a 2 party system. We have a multi party system. People who say shit like this aren't solving the problem of 2 major parties having all the power, they are contributing to it. Vote Green if you like the Greens, vote Libertarian if you like the Libertarians, vote whichever party you think would be best at running the country. If you vote any other way, you are failing democracy.
Given the absolutely shit choice of candidates this year, I predict third party candidates will get more of the vote. That may at least allow them to be in the debates, and possibly start a well needed reform of our election system.
