Well it wouldn't have to be. There have been religions in which the faith or the gods did not take primacy over things like nation, or family, or even ones own wishes and desires. It's only our modern lack of context (being treated to..essentially, three brands of the same shit here in the western world) that might make us miss that little tidbit. When we say "religion" we only think of abraham, anymore, and what's true or common to those three faiths isn't a necessary trait of faith in the general.
In my opinion, the judeo-christian doctrine (and lets lump islam in there as a derivative) are uniquely positioned to turn desperate people into martyrs. They can pull people who wouldn't martyr themselves for country.
