Most of my favourite guitarists played with the classic Gibson shape. Slash and buckethead for example both have signature les Paul's.
Shape doesn't concern me much so long as it's not outright uncomfortable. Sound is where it's at.
You can look at a CD all you want, you won't hear a thing until you put it in the stereo... same with a guitar, now that I think about it. An SG can deliver 90% of a Paul's tone, and do a lot that a 'Paul cannot do. I know there are a hell of a lot of signature Les Pauls ... but none of them deliver the versatility of an SG. Gets mighty close to not just a Les Paul, but also to a Tele.
If you haven't tried a few out, do so. You might be surprised.
Here's Phil X giving a vintage slab a workout:
Though I gotta say, I never have liked Vox amps much, except when I'm listening to Brian May. Go big, go big glass ... give me 6L6 tubes with a little grind and an SG pushing 'em, I'm a happy sonofabitch.
