It's special significance is that it's a product of a system that turns your hands into an easily read calculator for doing math with larger numbers (in a similar way to multiplying by nine with your digits). That system is useful for all soprts of shit that was important at the "dawn of math" - like counting season lengths. We don't know why we did it, but we know why it stuck.
