Since then, not a thing. When I was growing up, my parents were unemployed for most of the time I was in secondary school where my friends had VCRs, televisions, games. My parents didn't own not one single thing like that in the 1980s. We didn't have a car, we didn't have a fixed telephone which was the norm in the days. So, sorry to burst your bubble but luck didn't play a part in my life. Hard work did.
Oh, boohoo. I won't bore you with my life story and I'm still pretty well able to fill my belly and have a half decent life. Yet I don't conclude from my situation that everyone just needs boot strings to pull themselves out to make it. That's bullshit royale. A tall tale, just like winning the lottery.
For starters I live in a country where health care isn't an unaffordable luxury. Not all working Americans can say the same. And last time I checked, since you come from the UK and are living in France, this isn't an issue for you also.
I pay for my healthcare in France, as opposed to the UK. My girlfriend who wears glasses, has to pay roughly €800 for her glasses. Surgery costs a bit too. I am very rarely ill and prefer to stay out of the doctors, but I have to go to pay for my prescription renewal which is €25 euros each time. If I was ill or a hypochondriac, I would literally be skint by now.
