You know, I can go weeks without seeing a black person where I live? The same is probably true of the country club where your model racist lives. Even if they wanted to have black friends, it's unlikely that they'd be able to find any. That makes their situation explicable......even though the comment, as defense of a racist statement, isn't.
They see their "black friend"... maybe..once a year at a corporate dinner party. He;s not around enough to look thm in the face everytime they say something racist and say ":hey, asshole, stop being a racist". That he keeps coming to the corporate swoiree is taken by said racist, to be silent consent to his racist personality and a lack of dissent to his racist statements.
Maybe, and I doubt that this thought ever occurs to the "i have black friends" folks..... black people have better things to do than follow old white men around pointing out every racist thing that falls from their lips? Talk about a tiring job. Bet it would pay zero dollars an hour too...just like old white racists like it.
