How the fuck is there a statute of limitations for rape in New York?

Well the original point of the thread was to decry the fact that for a crime as serious as rape (or in fact any other sexual assault) actually has a statute of limitations appended to it.

Yes, and that's the exception. In most countries there is a statute on every crime except murder. And even that is relatively new in most European countries. Up until the 60ies it was 25 years and only got changed because of the fear of war criminals getting away.

But at the same time we don't have Double Jeopardy. You can be indicted numerous times for the same crime if some new evidence comes up.
