the great problem is not with a near date (like oct 21). The problem is if one comes after 5 or 10 or more years with a new end of the world date - especially if some great natural disasters happens in that period, or the year would sound interesting (as it was 2000). Anyway, the fact is that if things like this happen rarely, they have a stronger effect than if a new end of the world date was preached every day.
P.S. it is interesting how the end of the world dates are never preached as being after a very long time (i.e. you nowhere hear something like "the end of the world will happen in 2300!")
