I also note how much of the Gay civil rights struggle was carried out sans violence.  Off the top of my head, I recall the Dan White riot in Frisco as pretty much it for pleasantries, and considering the provocation, had I been there I very well could have participated, and that was the lone 'biggee'.  I'm sure the NIH wasn't thrilled with some of the ACT-UP demonstrations they witnessed, but their building wasn't burned to the ground either.

The above is what I'd call a struggle, where were all the gays then? The first gay pride parade was in 1970, which was well after the civil rights act...
