Well, going into the whys would be its own thread, because there'd be sme vehement argumentation, if my experiences are any guide -- and such would derail this thread, no doubt.
As for your correction, my M-W dictionary gives as one denotation of "conspiracy" the people involved in a plot. I'm working off memory here, but I'll be happy to link it once I'm on my laptop instead of this phone.
