It depends a lot...
On somethings, you can go for the cheapest available and it will work well enough for your purposes.
But, most of the time, I go for the middle range... after some research.
On things that get to have specially priced brands, I can't justify the premium price.
Top of the line will always have a premium associated, too... might as well go for the half-price, but only a bit less quality; or wait until something newer comes along and then get what was once top-of-the-line. This goes for most consumer electronics, from computers, to phones, to TVs.
On food, well... we like to see it before we buy it.
