The official Malaysian response on what was wrong with the "teapot cult"; "they were born Muslim". Theoretical civil religious freedom superseded by Sharia law, which then has the civil authorities fall over themselves to punish the separatists "insulting Islam". My Muslim friends insist this is entirely a Sharia issue, but I remain unconvinced.
There is a similar issue in Indonesia, where federal control is so weak that any religious issue threatens the archipelago.
