I'm old enough to remember Kill a Queer for Christ T-shirts and bumper stickers.
During Anita Bryant's reign of terror, concentration camps for homos were openly discussed.
When first apprised of what was to be later called the AIDS crisis, Ronald Reagan exclaimed, "I'm supposed to consider this a problem?"
I also remember my first Gay Pride Parade in '79 in Chicago. 10 years after the Stonewall riots, 250,000 gays and their supporters could march from the 'gay area' to Lincoln Park for a rally. Cops had to sweep for bombs, but the parade went ahead just fine. To this day I remain impressed at the peaceful nature of the thing; 250,000 people could have burned the city to the ground to make a point, but the civil rights battle was fought at the ballot box and the courts instead.
82' a friend of mine had all the windows knocked out of his car, not too much later another friend was murdered in a gay bar by a drive-by shooter. ~88' and HIV facility I had volunteered at was arsoned, neighborhood committees fought the existence of the place at every city council meeting for over a year too. Bad enough to have queers around, but sick ones? OMFG !

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
