This goes back before gay marriage too. gays were blamed for 9/11. One christian I knew blamed gays for Trump being in the white house because it's 'god's punishment'. For all the other sins out there, none get quite the same attention gay people do. The level of hatred for them by some Christians is just... out there. Is it because they need a group to hate, and it's not popular to hate black people anymore? I don't get the obsession, really.
I mean you don't see NEAR the vitrol for people who've divorced... or cheated on their spouse. They hold people like that up in high esteem. (As long as they're on their side of course). Or for murderers even. Another Christian I know said that H.H. Holmes could get to heaven--but a gay person couldn't.
Maybe gay people simply over Dramatize the christian position so they too can die on a cross.
Homosexuality is a sin like any other sexual sin. No better no worse. As such requires repentance to enter Heaven. Homosexuality is not the unforgivable sin, but at the same time like any other heterosexual sex centered sin it will not be forgiven of if one does not repent.
One can not 'repent' if by the culture and in their own mind one is not in sin.
The fight if any is to maintain the homosexual sin status so that any struggling homosexual can still find a place with their God if they so choose to have it. Removing said sin status dooms the individual to Hell no matter what they feel of God internally.
Ironically one could point out that the the one fighting to keep Homosexuality a sin, care more for the sinner than those who would allow this sin or any to go without acknowledging it's sin status.
