It's not about Christianity so much, as it is about conservatism, Christianity is just one of the ad hoc justifications. Fifty years ago, gayness was unacceptable. Any implication that you might be gay was considered an insult. It was unquestionably wrong, you were raised to believe it and everyone around you took it for granted.
Now that's changed, and it makes a lot of the people who were raised that way uncomfortable and squicky-feeling. They just want things to go back to the way they were. And there are a couple of Bible verses they can use to make out like it's not about their personal 'ick factor'. And if they're repressing sexual feelings for their own sex, they'll be even more uncomfortable with society not backing up their efforts to repress their nature.
There's no Biblical reason that homosexuality should be worse than remarrying after divorce when the divorce was on other grounds than adultery. Jesus DID have something to say about that.
