I have a lot of questions about cases like this. And before I go on, do not I lack sympathy.
But honestly I don't think kids should be allowed to make decisions like this and that their views are often directly imprinted by their parents. I simply do not think that a 8 year old has the mental faculty and tools to make such a decision. And I think especially in the case of children, other less drastic treatments should be researched.
