Exactly. Because at any given time, you can literally go to your local fire department, tell them you need smoke detectors for your home and they will GIVE them to you.
Also... if you rent it is a requirement that your landlord provide WORKING smoke detectors in your home. You must supply batteries, but the detectors must be functioning at the time you sign a lease.
