I'm not pretending to be dense I'm expressing my opinion about this meme you scruffy little cunt.
Scare quotes are apparently, according to wikipedia
It doesn't say scare quotes make an entire statement non literal.
So they might be used in a phrase like "The 'thugs' were carrying bags for the old women as they were shot by police"
That doesn't mean the entire phrase isn't to be taken literally, it's there to show the auther wouldn't have used that word and would have probably used an exact opposite word, in this example "Innocent teenagers" might be used instead of "thugs".
As it says they're also used to display contempt for a word or phrase.
So I think this person who created the meme simply used the scare quotes to express contempt for the phrase stoned to death and to make a FALSE blanket statement about atheists. But I don't know because I didn't make this meme, and you didn't either. So you don't know.
All you did is project your ideas onto this little meme and say you know exactly what the person was meant to be saying for a fact.
Scare quotes are apparently, according to wikipedia
Quote:Scare quotes, shudder quotes,[1][2] or sneer quotes[3][4][5][excessive citations] are quotation marks placed around a word or phrase to signal that a term is being used in a non-standard, ironic, or otherwise special sense.[6] They may be used to imply that a particular expression is not necessarily how the author would have worded a concept.[7] Scare quotes may serve a function similar to verbally preceding a phrase with the expression "so-called"[8]—they may imply skepticism or disagreement, belief that the words are mis-used, or that the writer intends a meaning opposite to the words enclosed in quotes
Writers use scare quotes for a variety of reasons. Scare quotes are used to imply an element of doubt or ambiguity regarding the words or ideas within the marks,[21] or even outright contempt.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
