I don't think he means all atheists will go to hell. I think he means if you are atheist but you nonetheless genuinely seek truth to the best of your understanding, and you love goodness and love, you will not go to hell.
I did mean exactly this. Thanks for clarifying, but I also mean by love of goodness and love, it's true nature, not what merely desire it to be. If they genuinely seek to know it's true nature and love to find that, they are believers per definition of Quran, for they are in state of submission and peace with the truth, and would accept whatever signs they come across.
Some people have said things if they come to know God exists, they would still not Worship or submit to it even he sends Messengers, and even if they know the Messengers are the truth. And some people praised those people saying that.
So I don't really know what to make of that, maybe they are just playing devil's advocate, but play devil's advocate too long, and you might become his advocate!
I have seen ppl say that, but I don't dismiss them as people who will go to hell. I see it as them having the wrong perception of God, if He were to exist. I truly think that when they finally see that God is real in the afterlife, and they finally see and understand that God truly is the embodiment of goodness and love, that they will want to praise Him.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
