Yeah, the Bible was pretty much designed to appeal to those who felt broken, poor and dispirited. It was the perfect way to convince people that their suffering was good. It made them Christ-like. It made them holy and beloved by God. Now, you can shit right down their throats and call it love. They won't argue. They'll keep giving their meager pennies to the church in order to have a better afterlife. It's the long con perfected.
That said, I'm still not sure that applies to the modern world. Again, I grew up impoverished and was not religious. I don't have a lot of poor religious friends. Most of the religious folk I know are middle class.
