Didn't Hawking claim that there are no true singularities a few years ago? That event horizons are apparent, not actual? If he is correct, there can be no singularity at the core of a black hole, and the universe can't have begun from a singularity.

Yup I believe he talks about in black holes and baby universes and in the grand design . But that's the rub is it's actual or not . Or as Carroll puts it

But singularities are just signs that the theory is breaking down, and has to be replaced by something better. The obvious choice for “something better” is a sensible theory of quantum gravity
