I think if you retract race from any situation involving slavery, slavery still happens.
For instance if Africa was populated by relatively not very well armed tribes of white people that don't have the best technology on the planet, and they're sitting on a lot of land and a lot of resources....slavery and colonization still happens.
Well, the difference in skin color was what made it so easy for them to differentiate. Finding and positively identifying escaped slaves of the same pigment as the slave masters isn't exactly feasible. So perception of race gave them a readily available means of both justifying (they're DIFFERENT from us! We can SEE the difference!) and keeping track (Hey, that person's darker than us...maybe they're an escaped slave!), at least in American slavery.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?
