First of all, Christianity has had more than a millenia more than Islam to be dragged kicking in screaming into modernity. All improvements in Christianity are caused by outside, secular forces.
Second, can you imagine what Christianity, especially Catholicism would have been like in the Dark Ages if they had access to modern weapons of mass destruction?! Hell, they did enough damage with what they had.
Third, Islam has never had an Enlightenment like influence, as Christianity has.
So yeah, in the present, Islam sems more dangerous than Christianity. But historically speaking, not a lot of difference overall.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
